People often ask us where the name “OMG! Decadent Donuts” came from.
Bakery items that are both gluten-free and vegan often have the taste and texture, of, well cardboard or sawdust. People literally can’t believe how OMG! Decadent Donuts taste—so light and fluffy on the inside and with that delightful crunch on the outside.
The first part of our name, the letters O, M, and G, don’t stand for anything. It’s just an O, an M, and a G. People think the G might stand for golly, gosh, goodness, or God, but we’d never be blasphemous. G is just G, M is just M, and O is just O. The reason for this part of the name is that in the trial phase of the product before the business even had a name, this is what people would exclaim when they tuck into one of our donuts (often with a mouthful of donut). To this day, this still happens all the time. Pretty much every customer still says the same thing, even if they’ve had them before, and it’s still usually said with a mouthful of donut.
What about the ‘decadent’ part? Well, they are decadent, aren’t they? They are tempting little morsels and a little bit naughty (they are a treat). But the reality is, that part of the name came about because we couldn’t register the name “OMG Donuts” at the time, so we had to add another word.
And ‘donut’—well hello—that’s what they are. The word “doughnut” (or “donut”) is an interesting term with a rich history. The modern spelling “donut” is actually a shortened, simplified version of the original word “doughnut.” The term “doughnut” can be traced back to the early 19th century. The word is a combination of “dough” (referring to the mixture of flour, water, and other ingredients used to make bread or pastry) and “nut,” referring to the small, round shape of the pastry. But our donuts are 100% nut-free (also free from gluten, dairy, egg, wheat, yeast, and sulphites). We also prefer “donut” over “doughnut” because there’s no “ugh” in our treats. (Dad joke of the day right there.)
In creating the product, the directors of OMG! imagined a kid’s birthday party or office morning tea where every guest could eat the same food regardless of dietary restrictions or requirements. The aim was to make the donuts ‘inclusive’, so not only are they vegan and free from most allergens and endorsed by Coeliac New Zealand, Coeliac Australia, The Vegan Society of Aoetearoa New Zealand, Vegan Australia, they also respect others’ faiths and beliefs, and are accredited and certified by Kosher Australia and the Halal Certification Authority of Australia.
